How the estimate is calculated

Revenue & profit

Revenue = entered item price + shipping charged to the buyer.

Profit = revenue − modeled fees − item cost − shipping paid − packaging.

Margin = profit ÷ revenue. Return on total cost = profit ÷ (entered costs + fees). Undefined ratios display as zero in the current calculator.

Platform fees

Transaction = 6.5% × revenue. Processing = country rate × (revenue + separately entered buyer tax) + country fixed fee on paid orders.

Regulatory = applicable country rate × revenue. Listing is included when selected; bundles model a listing fee per unit.

Ads & seller-fee tax

Selected Offsite Ads = 12% or 15% × revenue, capped at USD 100 per attributed order. You select the applicable rate; the tool does not determine eligibility. Non-USD caps use the same approximate conversion as listing fees.

Seller-fee tax = your entered rate × only the fee types you select. We do not determine tax registration, exemptions, recoverability or invoice-specific mixed rates.

Targets & scenarios

Reverse pricing searches for the price that reaches your target, rounding the price upward to cents. Entered buyer tax stays fixed in reverse mode.

Discounts reduce item price; free shipping removes the buyer charge and retains shipping cost. Scenario tax scales with revenue. Comparisons are previews only: the original price and costs stay unchanged.

Monthly profit repeats the same order at the chosen volume. It is a scenario, not a demand forecast.

A worked US example

Item $35.00 + buyer shipping $4.50 = revenue $39.50. Item cost $9.00 + shipping paid $4.20 + packaging $0.80 = costs $14.00. Listing included; no Offsite Ads or entered tax.

  1. Listing: $0.20.
  2. Transaction: $39.50 × 6.5% = $2.5675.
  3. Processing: $39.50 × 3% + $0.25 = $1.435.
  4. Total modeled fees: $4.2025 → displayed $4.20.
  5. Profit: $39.50 − $14.00 − $4.2025 = $21.2975 → displayed $21.30.

We retain precision internally and round displayed totals to cents. Displayed fee lines can differ from their displayed sum by a cent; Etsy's invoice rounding may also differ.

What is automatic, manual or excluded?

Automatic from your settings

Selected country processing, transaction, regulatory, listing and Offsite Ads fees; entered costs; margin and volume projections.

You supply these

Actual costs including labor, buyer tax amount, seller-fee tax rate and taxable fee types, ad attribution rate, and buyer destination for Canada/Australia. Default zero tax is not a statement that you are exempt.

Not fully modeled

Live FX, listing-to-bank currency conversion charges, refunds, setup fees, subscriptions, deposit fees, Etsy Ads spend, income tax, recoverable input tax and VAT already included in item prices. Include gift wrap or personalization in item price.

Why payout can differ

Payouts can include other orders, prior balances, reserves, refunds, credits, subscriptions and currency conversion. This calculator estimates one order's profit after entered costs, not the amount Etsy will transfer to your bank.

Bundle assumptions: two items have 10% item discount and 1.2× packaging; three have 15% discount, 1.4× packaging and 0.60 extra shipping cost in the selected currency. Buyer shipping is charged once.

Official sources & maintenance

When rules change, we update the configuration, calculation checks and this explanation together. A review date records a source check, not a guarantee of future rates. This page covers the Etsy calculator; eBay and platform-comparison tools have their own assumptions.
